Stella has a quite strong and confident personality. She stands her ground without backing down, unless there is proof of her being wrong about it. She is determined, both professionally and personally, and also quite intelligent. She won't back off a case until the culprit is found. That is also making her quite driven... and a little stubborn.
Those character traits cause her to sometimes clash over things with Mac, because both have that stubbornness and determination and both don't back down easily.

Still, Stella is known to care deeply for Mac and for their team. She constantly worries about Mac's well-being, physically as well as mentally, and is quite protective over their team and her friends. She'd do anything to protect them from any harm.
She usually doesn't show her emotions openly to anyone, however, when cases get to her, she does show that and people around her will notice. She's a strong woman, but she does have feelings, too. She does show it openly when something truly disturbs or disgusts her, and she won't hold back saying so, but usually she has a good self-control.
Stella is kind, helpful, compassionate and can show empathy as well as sympathy to people who obviously need it. Especially to victims of crimes. But she also has a bit of a temper when it comes to people taking her for a fool and playing her. Then she goes after them with everything she's got.

Stella is a half-Greek, half-Italian orphan who grew up at St. Basil's Orphanage, which she left when she was eighteen. It is revealed later, that her mother was a restoration painter from Naousa, who was in New York with an exhibit, bringing her two-year-old daughter Stella with her. During that trip to New York, her mother was killed in a traffic accident, leaving young Stella without any family. However, it is also revealed later on, that she got close to a professor who had actually known her mother. He was a father-figure to Stella, but sadly killed on a trip back to Greece.

During an investigation, she initially expressed sympathy for a woman who appears to be the only survivor of a double homicide in her home. After further investigation revealed that the woman is not the victim but actually the mastermind of the crime, Stella was furious and confronted the woman in the interrogation room. When the woman smugly compared her situation to Stella's with Frankie, Stella countered that their situations were nothing alike: Stella had been a victim who acted out of self-defence, while the woman was a cold-blooded murderer who wanted to escape what she hinted was a bad marriage.

While processing a crime scene, Stella accidentally cut herself on a piece of glass, potentially exposing herself to the victim's HIV-positive blood. Though she immediately cleaned and bandaged the wound, as well as starting an anti-viral regimen, she wouldn't know for several months whether she has contracted HIV. The uncertainty had already interfered with her life, as when she refused to let Hawkes touch her after a suspect smashed the one-way mirror in the interrogation room and Stella was cut on the cheek by a shard of the broken mirror.
During her time of waiting for the results, Stella administered CPR to ME Sid Hammerback after he suffered from an allergic reaction to a sandwich he had eaten, possibly exposing him to HIV. When she shared her concern with him, he was simply thankful that she saved his life.

Some time later, she asked permission to do a PCR DNA test to know for sure whether or not she's contracted HIV, to which Mac agreed and their Lab Tech Adam Ross performed. After that test, she finally learns that she is still HIV-negative.
However, due to an error during the PCR DNA test, her blood ends up in CODIS, leading to a hit in Philadelphia's Cold Case squad, who found bloody clothes buried along the highway. They send Scotty Valens to investigate Stella's involvement in the case. She is later cleared of culpability in the case. Stella did find the real suspect though, her foster sister and confronted her. However, she did not take her in. It is unknown whether or not Stella revealed anything about her to Scotty Valens.

Stella and her colleagues attempt to defend Mac Taylor on the stand after the senior CSI came under fire for his supposed culpability in the death of kidnapper/murderer Clay Dobson. She is forced to admit that Mac violated department procedures when he charged alone after Dobson. However, Stella later advised Mac to learn to play politics, as that is what the trumped-up charges are all about. After Mac is cleared, she congratulated him on a game well-played, but agreed that this is likely not the last time he will be put under the microscope.

Although Stella did leave for New Orleans a couple of years ago, she returned about two years into the job there to return to New York. That city has always been her home and Stella found it hard to adjust to the new city, although she did an incredible job leading the Crime Lab in that city. But she missed her old friends and mostly her best friend: Mac Taylor.  
So, after visiting them over a New Year's Party, she decided to return home. Stella ended up in Albion working a case with Mac. Somewhere after her return home they eventually ended up trying the relationship road, and Stella had no reason to regret that choice, yet.
