I'll face myself

to cross out what i've become

Lightly kicking his feet out of his stirrups, Fendrel easily slid off of Conquest's back, allowing the stallion to meander loyally over to the door of his caravan before looking over his shoulder at his rider and flicking his ears about. "Yes, I know," Fendrel murmured, rubbing the horse's nose before stepping up into his home, "We're home and I promise that's the end for today, okay?" The black horse snorted as if to disagree with the statement, flicking his ears about further as Fendrel shook his head in amusement, sliding his sword and pistol from their respective holsters and stashing them away for safe keeping and their later use.

Conquest nickered at him through the door and the assassin waved a hand at the stallion, waving off the horse's antics as he stood and turned. What he could use was some for of brief relaxation, maybe even a nap, before another possible outing later when darkness started to fully fall across the kingdom. He always liked it better at that twilight hour, where it wasn't quite dark, but day was making its quick leave to usher in the stars that would follow. It was a sight that never ceased to relax and please the young male. Ready to settle down, Fendrel suddenly took notice to a short note left on the small table by the place where he stashed his weapons. A frown flitted across his features. He hadn't left anything out, much less a note. He wasn't one for writing that much period. Taking a step forward and hearing another agitated whinny from Conquest, he took a brief look over the words on the paper. "What in the name of...?" He was cut off by a sharp pain in the back of his neck, and, before he could even begin to think of what could've caused it, darkness had pulled him in.

"Move aside there, stupid horse." Conquest snorted defiantly at the stranger's voice, nickering again as he shuffled out of the way of the strangers and flicked his ears about in an attempt at communication with the horses that accompanied some of the stranger's friends. He whinnied at the stranger again as the man turned and rode off with his buddies, snorting when there was no response from any of the horses or even the humans before he briefly stuck his head inside his master's caravan, stretching his neck to do so. With a final snort, the stallion wheeled around, whinnied and galloped off to find someone to help. Those strangers didn't have any good intentions, and the stallion's understanding of his master sent him to look for the male assassin's friend. He'd understand, the horse was certain.

are you coming to the tree? where i told you to run, so we'd both be free
STRANGE THINGS DID HAPPEN HERE, NO STRANGER WOULD IT BE IF WE MET AT MIDNIGHT IN THE HANGING TREE

An exhausted smile graced Jack's lips as he trudged to Fen's caravan from the Cullis Gate nearby. His arms were full with a woven basket, packed with food and alcohol. He'd spent the week back in Silverpines, helping them out with their growing Balverine problem. The village had welcomed him back with open arms, even after such a long time away, something that had warmed his heart. He had expected some bitterness from their end since he'd left on his own adventures, leaving them to fend for themselves just like before. But there was no bitterness, only warmth and kindness. They were happy to see their Saviour of Silverpines again, and even more happy to learn that he'd found a special someone. Jack had left Fendrel's name out of it, cheekily quipping that he didn't kiss and tell, for fear that someone might tip off the Royal Guard off about him dating an assassin that was on wanted posters all over the country and get Fendrel killed. But he couldn't stop himself from beaming every time he thought of that wonderful man. Career choice aside, Jack loved every single thing about him.

He'd spent the day working on a new defense system for the Silverpinians to help against the Balverines when he was away. They were managing just fine without him, but he was hoping to get something in place that didn't rely so much on people staying awake throughout the entire night just to make sure the silver nitrate torches didn't go out. That was dangerous and was bound to get people killed. The new system was still largely a work in progress, but Jack promised to be back and finish it before long. But for now, he'd already spent too much time away from Fen and he didn't want to spend another night without him. So he'd gotten together a basket full to the brim with delicious food and various alcoholic beverages, deciding that he was going to take Fen out on a midnight picnic.

But all thoughts of picnics and potentially making love under the stars had gone right out the window when he'd gotten to Fendrel's caravan. His suspicions had arisen when Conquest had galloped up to him, whinnying and snorting in fear, his eyes so wide that Jack could see the whites of the equine's eyes, even in the growing darkness. He'd attempted to soothe the poor steed, but nothing worked and finally Jack gave up, leaving the horse alone and sprinting to his lover's caravan. The basket slipped from Jack's hands as he took in the sight of the ransacked caravan, but he didn't react. Someone had taken Fen. What was food when someone had taken the one person he'd loved with all his heart since Ianto? He ran a hand through his hair, a shaky breath leaving his lips. He had to find him. At any cost. He had to find Fendrel and bring him back home, to safety.

A low whistle pierced the still air, followed by the sounds of Jack urgently yelling to Conquest to come over. The horse, who had frantically been dashing between Jack and the entrance to Driftwood, galloped over. Leaping onto the stallion, Jack grabbed the reins and dug his heels into the horse's sides, urging him on. But Conquest needed no motivating; with a shrill whinny, the steed was off, galloping through the woods. He wanted to find his beloved owner just as much as Jack wanted to. "I'm coming, Fen," Jack muttered, leaning down lower towards the horse's neck so they could go faster. "Just hold on."

I'll face myself

to cross out what i've become

Fen couldn't even begin to guess how much time had passed since the chaos of his arrival back home in Driftwood, but what he knew now was that this was bad. Really, really bad. He couldn't remember how he'd gotten here, but he didn't have to think too hard to know he was in trouble.

The back of his head and neck still throbbed with a dull pain that kept him from looking around too much, but he could put together enough to guess that 'here' was somewhere right about Bowerstone Industrial. He knew most of the Industrial area like he knew his firearms, and there weren't exactly too many places on Fen's visited list that he could match to a description that he could give what he could see.

With a semi-heavy sigh, Fen closed his eyes tightly again, trying to put all of his jumbled thoughts into their respective places so he could think clearly about the situation. The last thing he could remember well enough to say with any certainty that it had happened was arriving back at his caravan on Conquest and the stallion's agitated, foreboding attitude.

As to why he was here, the male could guess. Not just anyone would up and kidnap one of the most wanted assassins in the kingdom. If anything, they'd report him to the Guard and they'd take care of him. But he was almost certain that the Guard didn't go out and abduct their most wanted criminals and then leave them tied up somewhere in the underbelly of Industrial to send off to Ravenscar later. Although he'd hardly bothered to keep up with the vine of news about how the kingdom was being run, he knew enough to feel fairly certain that such a treatment by Guard members was something their dear queen, maybe even her elder brother the prince, would frown upon.

He had plenty of enemies that were capable of this. He was a killer for hire. He was the one that pulled the trigger for other people and didn't ask questions, especially recently because of... Jack... Dear Avo, Jack... He hadn't seen his lover in what felt like ages, so a visit by him seemed about due (overdue, if you asked for Fen's personal opinion, but that was seriously not his biggest issue at the moment). If he found out he was missing... Even worse, if this went overly wrong... Well, Fen didn't even want to think about what would happen...

And there was also Conquest to worry about... That faithful horse of his was one of the few other souls roaming this land that Fendrel trusted entirely, and he was a damn smart horse, too. In a lighter situation, Fen might've even bet that the horse knew enough to go looking for Jack.

Until such a moment presented itself that things changed, for better or worse, he still had to figure out what the hell was going on. It had to be from something recent... There was no way his list of enemies, which seemed to almost constantly be growing, would put off retaliation for long. Thanks to his recent influences, which shall only be named as a certain Captain with a charming smile, that list wasn't so rapidly growing and long as used it be, but it was still a decent list. Family members and close friends were always a threat, after all...

Damn it, you idiot! Why couldn't you ever have the sense to leave well enough alone? He'd been blaming everyone he had in his books for how he had acted, and he had only recently began to realize how childish that was. His parents might have been lousy and unloving, but they hadn't forced him into this line of work. They hadn't forced him to do much of anything besides fend for himself. And now look where such choices had landed him... As much as hated to acknowledge it, he knew what this was. It had taken a hell of a lot more than it should've to make him learn, and he'd finally started to understand who the hell he was, and here he was, about to have it all taken away before he even had the chance to explain himself and apologize for it all to the one person that had taught him more about himself and life in general than he could've ever imagined possible. He hadn't ever been the religious sort about anything, but then seemed like a damn good time to pray to whoever or whatever was out there and would listen... And the chance wasn't even for himself - he didn't deserve another shot at this whirlwind of a thing called Life. He wanted that chance for the people that had given his share of that thing a purpose - a purpose he wasn't ready to leave behind just yet.
