In Peace, Vigilance. In War, Victory. In Death, Sacrifice. These words are the motto of the Grey Wardens. Aedan himself is the Warden-Commander or leader of the Grey Warden's in Ferelden, and has been for quite some time, thus this motto is quite familiar to him. He understands it fully and lives his life by it. He understands that in peace he must stand vigil upon the threats that face the world, in war he must obtain victory at all costs, no matter how immoral it may seem at times, and sacrifices must be made, death is the ultimate sacrifice. At the same time however, Aedan will try to minimize the sacrifice, avoid unnecessary deaths.

Aedan was raised to value honour, courage and loyalty. Honour you words, if Aedan promises that he will do something, he will do all that in his power to complete it.Protect those weaker than you, as a member of House Cousland, one of the oldest and most powerful noble house in Ferelden, Aedan was honour bound to protect those whom are weaker than him, those he command, and those he rules over. Courage, death is something we all face, how we face it is another question. DO you want o die cowering in a corner, or standing tall and mighty? Aedan understood courage and valued courage, and since becoming a Grey Warden, he has understood it even more. Death is not something Aedan fears anymore, the taint is a slow death sentence. What one can do is seek do as much as one can in the time he or she has.

• Talented Swordsman - Trained at a young age, Aedan Cousland is skilled in the usage of a sword and shield. His combat techniques focus on being defensive and tiring out his opponent. Once his opponent is sufficiently tired, Aedan will exploit the fact that he was conserving his energy during the fight and use that to his advantage.
  
• Enhanced Stamina and Strength - Due to being a Grey Warden, Aedan's physical attributes have been enhanced by the taint of Darkspawn. This enhancement however is not without sacrifices. The taint is a slow death sentence, to become a Grey Warden, one must drink the blood of Darkspawn. This will either kill you outright or turn you into a Grey Warden. Once you are a Grey Warden, most believe that you are now immune to the taint, but in all reality you have only delayed the taint. The taint will slowly eat away your body, it will grant you strength, but in the end it will corrupt your mind, drive you insane.

Aedan Cousland, second child of Bryce and Eleanor Cousland, Teyrn's of Highever. The Couslands were one of the oldest and most powerful families in Ferelden. They were also known as some of the crowns most loyal servants. As a child, Aedan was raised in a life of privilege more than fitting of a person of his status. As the second child of the Teyrn, Aedan was the back up heir for the title.

When Aedan was 23, the Fifth Blight began in Ferelden. A blight is when the Darkspawn awake a Old God and turn him into a Archdemon. Once a Blight begins, the Darkspawn become organized and unified, they then proceed to spread the taint across the land. Aedan's father and brother intended to head out to rally with the crown and face this Blight, but as soon as his brother left with the main army, the Couslands were betrayed by one of their oldest friends, Arl Rendon Howe. Howe took the opportunity to take over Highever and massacre all those in it. The Cousland's managed to reach a secret passage to escape, but the Teyrn was too injured to survive the trip. Originally Aedan intended to die with his parents, killing as many of Howe's men as possible, but he was conscripted into the Grey Warden's. Aedan's honour dictated that he must obey, the Right of Conscription was a age old tradition. The Right of Conscription allowed the Grey Warden's to force anyone they wished, from murderers to kings into the Grey Warden.

Once conscripted, Aedan traveled to Ostagar with Warden Commander Duncan to meet up with the army and to perform the Joining ritual. Once at Ostagar, Aedan was informed that his brother was out scouting, thus he was not able to inform his brother of Howe's betrayal of the Couslands. Aedan was the only one whom survived the Joining ritual out of three recruits. Once the Joining was done, Aedan was tasked to light a beacon to signal reinforcements for the main army at Ostagar with another Warden, Alistair Therin, illegitimate half brother of the king of Ferelden.

Aedan lighted the beacon, but was betrayed by Loghain. Loghain ordered a retreat of the reinforcing army and left the main army and most of Ferelden's Grey Wardens to die. Loghain then seized power by claiming to be the regent of the Queen, his daughter and branded all Grey Wardens to be traitors and have caused the defeat at Ostagar. Aedan and AListair were overwhelmed by Darkspawn at the Ostagar beacon tower, but were saved by Flemeth, a Witch of the Wilds. Flemeth wanted the Blight to end, and sent her daughter to journey with Aedan in gathering allies.

Aedan traveled across Ferelden gathering allies, the Dwarves of Orzammar, Dalish Elves, The Circle of Magi, and the forces of Redcliffe. Once he was done gathering allies, Aedan traveled to Denerim, the capital of Fereldam and called a Landsmeet, a gathering of all nobles in Ferelden. During this Landsmeet, Aedan killed Rendon Howe and placed his best friend and fellow Grey Warden upon the throne of Ferelden. Alistair was the bastard child of one of Ferelden's previous kings.

Aedan then prepared for the final battle to end the Blight. A attack on the Archdemon, it was here he was informed when a Grey Warden killed a Archdemon, he too would die, but he was offered a way out by Morrigan. Morrigan had a ritual which would concieve a child and allow the Warden whom killed the Archdemon survive. Aedan accepted this offer and proceed to kill the Archdemon and ending the Fifth Blight.

Once the Blight was over, Aedan became the Warden Commander in Ferelden, he also held the position of Chancellor of Ferelden, Heir to the Teyrn of Highever and Arl of Amarathine. As Warden Commander, Aedan encountered a Darkspawn named The Architect. THis Darkspawn was different from the rest, it was intelligent and had freewill from the calling. In the end, Aedan forged a alliance with this Darkspawn.
